A Cased 14 Bore Percussion Double Barrelled Sporting Gun, by J. Purdey 314 1/2 Oxford Street, London. No. 4048 For 1845.

With browned damascus twist sighted barrels signed in full along the rib, breeches each with short platinum line and pierced platinum plug, the flat between engraved with a symmetrical foliate motif, tang engraved with scrolling foliage, signed border engraved serial numbered flat locks each decorated with foliate scrollwork. Dolphin hammers en suite, figured half-stock with chequered grip (old crack to the left of the barrel tang) and fore-end, border engraved steel mounts decorated with foliate scrollwork and comprising butt-plate and expertly re-engraved serial numbered trigger-guard. Trigger-plate with slender foliate scroll engraved finial, vacant silver escutcheon, and original brass-mounted ramrod.

In a relined and refitted brass-mounted mahogany case with some accessories including a Hawksley brass-mounted powder flask with fluted bag shaped body, and leather shot flask with brass nozzle, the interior of the lid with makers trade label (minor damage). The exterior with circular brass escutcheon engraved with owners crest and motto, and flush-fitting circular brass carrying handle engraved with owners name John Burgess Karlsake Esqre.. London proof marks and James Purdeys barrelsmiths mark. Barrels 75cm, Overall length 115cm.
