"An Antique Cased 54 Bore Tranter Third Model Double Trigger Percussion Revolver Retailed By B. Cogswell. Circa 1858. With 15cm octagonal sighted barrel, the top strap engraved B. COGSWELL 224 STRAND LONDON, fitted with Tranters third model loading lever, foliate and borderline engraved frame, five shot cylinder with roped band decoration, one piece chequered walnut grip, some finish in protected areas.
Overall length 31cm. Contained in its correct green baize lined and partitioned mahogany case, the lid escutcheon engraved M. LLOYD FERRAR over the family crest of a Dexter Arm Embowed in Scale Armour Arg., the hand bare grasping a broken sword, over the motto FERRE VA FERME over the initials B.C.L dated 1862. Accessories include a correct Tranter double cavity mould, a copper bodied pistol flask by Dixon, pewter oil bottle, cleaning rod, a labelled tin for Tranters Patent Lubricated bullets and a cap tin, screwdriver, the case in extremely good condition.
Provenance: Michael Lloyd Ferrar was born in Coleraine, Londonderry in November 1839. He joined the East India Governments Bengal Civil Service in 1862 as a commissioner. He died on 23rd April 1904 at Little Gidding, Ealing and is buried in a local cemetery. It would appear this pistol was given to him in 1862 when he left for India, possibly by someone with the initials inscribed on the escutcheon B.C.L."
