A cased 500 (40 bore) pinfire double-barreled sporting rifle by J. Purdey of 214 1/2 Oxford Street, London made in 1863 with damascus twist sighted barrels each rifled with 6 spiral grooves, signed in full along the rib and leaf-sighted from 100 to 200 yards. Each leaf with central platinum line. long slender border engraved tang decorated with foliate scroll work, swept fences, rounded action, rotary underlever of Lefaucheux type with hollowed terminal checkered for the fingers, signed border engraved case-hardened serial number long detented back action lock, and dolphin hammers all decorated en-suite, blued safety catch, figured half stock with cheek piece and checkered, checkered detachable forend with plain underlever flat and engraved steel mounts, steel mounts comprising checkered butt plate engraved ""charge 2 1/4 drams over no.6 powder"" on the heel, border engraved trigger guard retaining some blueing, serial numbered behind the checkered spur and decorated with foliate scroll work between borders of repeated flowering foliage on the bow, and retaining some original finish.

In original brass mounted oak case fitted and lined in burgundy baize with a lot of accessories including James Dixon & Sons brass mounted powder flask with bag shaped planished tin body, steel bullet mould, brass powder measure, and all other accessories. The interior with makers trade label, exterior with circular vacant brass escutcheon centered on a flush-fitting circular brass carrying handle. London proof marks. Barrel Length - 76.2cm. Lit. - Unsworth p.173 - recorded as sold on 13/7/1863 for £88. Built for a Mr J. D. Gordon.
