An antique pair of 54 bore flintlock boxlock pocket pistols by Perry of London, late 18th century. Turn off cannon barrels, 6.2cm. Overall length, 20.5cm. Border engraved actions each signed in an oval against a marshal trophy and foliage on one side. Engraved London on a scroll amidst foliage and rocaille on the other. Sliding trigger guard safety catches each engraved with a flowerhead in a diamond on the bore. Figured flat sided butts, inlaid with silver scrollwork and rocailles highlighted with silver pins, vacant silver escutcheons and tower private proof marks.
The maker is probably William II Perry, uncle of Harvey Walklate Mortimer to whom the latter was apprenticed in 1765/66. It is thought that Perry started his career in West Bromwich and was a gun lock maker to the board of ordinance between 1756/58.
He is then recorded as a gunmaker and wine importer at 94 Snowhill, Birmingham between 1776/83 and at No.7 steel house lane, Birmingham between 1784/88.
