An Antique Pair Of 25 Bore Flintlock Brass Mounted Holster Pistols By I. Cosens Of London, Late 17th Century With three stage barrels 27cm now a dull grey finish, octagonal breeches becoming polygonal and each with an engraved band at the rear, border engraved tangs each decorated with a perched bird, border engraved rounded locks each signed in capitals and decorated with strawberry foliage terminating in a monster head on the tail, foliate engraved cocks, artificially figured moulded ash full stocks, mounts comprising side plates each cast, pierced and chased as a serpent, foliage issuing from its mouth, steel drop shaped escutcheons each engraved No. 9, border engraved spurred pommels each decorated with graduated spheres along the spurs, two bands of foliage around the retaining screw and with scrolling foliage involving a monster head on both sides, trigger guards each with pointed finial and engraved with symmetrical designs of foliage, turned baluster ramrod pipes, and later brass capped ramrods each with steel worm, London proof marks and unidentified horseshoe mark. Overall length 43cm. The maker is either John Cosens or his brother Thomas. The former was free of the Gunmakers Company in 1662 and was Gunmaker in Ordinary for Charles II. In 1670 he was fined for filing barrels after proof, and was Contractor to Ordnance between 1667 and 1680. The latter was apprenticed to John Silke and turned over to his brother in 1664. Free of the Gunmakers Company in 1673, the last reference to him is in 1677
