A Cased 54 Bore Percussion Tranter Double Action Five Shot Revolver, retailed by John Hayton of of Grahamstown in South Africa, circa 1855. With blued octagonal sighted barrel engraved around the muzzle and with scrolling foliage at the breech, blued border engraved top-strap with retailers details, bright cylinder with knurled forward edge, blued border engraved frame, trigger guard and ovoidal butt cap decorated with scrolling foliage, blued hinged safety stop and arbor pin catch, bright foliate engraved patent rammer, and chequered rounded butt.
Nicely finished in a relined and refitted mahogany case with some accessories including a brass bullet mould and a James Dixon & Sons powder flask. The exterior of the lid with circular vacant brass escutcheon. Birmingham proof marks. Barrel 15.3cm, overall length 32cm. Provenance: Sold at Bonhams July 2007 Lot 438. John Hayton is recorded working in Grahamstown, South Africa from about 1850 to 1873. He became famous as the designer of the Hayton or Cape rifle
