An Antique 20 bore German Wheellock Sporting Gun by George Gross, dating from the third quarter of the 17th. Probably originating from Augsburg.

An antique German Wheellock Sporting Gun by George Gross, third quarter of the 17th century, probably Augsburg. Signed sighted octagonal swamped smooth bored barrel, engraved with a band of pellets at the breech, 78.4cm. Flat lock engraved with flowers fitted with internal wheel and cover ensuite. Pierced and engraved dog, sliding pan cover with button release, open work bridle involving a serpent. Double set trigger with full stock moulded over the fore end. Inlaid with engraved stag horn plaques including a foliate roundel beneath the breech. A pair of flower head washers for the side nails with a doe in between. All enclosed by a segmental line. Butt features a running stag on the left and sliding covered patch box on the right veneered in burwood and stag-horn panels. The forward panel decorated with a dog retrieving a bird on the right, iron trigger guard shaped for the fingers. Engraved stag horn ram rod pipes and horn tipped wooden ramrod.
