An Antique North European 28 Bore Wheellock Holster Pistol, early 17th Century, possibly Alsatian, with tapering octagonal barrel, 54cm, struck on the underside at the breech with an unidentified barrelsmiths mark. The tang held by a screw from beneath. Flat lock, with broad interrupted bevelled borders and rounded tail. Flat external wheel retaining bracket secured by two screws, sprung manually operated pan cover, cock with chiselled spring and baluster bridle, secured by two secrews and pivoting button safety catch acting against an external spring.


Figured fruitwood full stock, profusely inlaid opposite the lock. With fishtail butt and ovoidal pommel. With brass scrollwork terminating in engraved mother of pearl, all against a background of minute dots and scrolls with wire borderwork. Iron triggerguard and replacement fore end cap. Single raprod pipe and brass tipped ramrod. Overall length 73cm. Provenance: Warwick Castle, Warwickshire. Thomas Del Mar Ltd, 26 June 2007, lot 268.
