An antique 40 bore ottoman Balkan miquelet lock rifle with rifled barrel, late 18th century.
An antique 40 bore ottoman Balkan miquelet lock rifle with rifled barrel, late 18th century. Octagonal swamped etched twist sighted barrel, chiseled with a low moulding at the breech and muzzle. Retained by three engraved brass bands stamped with two marks over the breech. Plain breech tang incorporating a large braised back sight the central panel missing. Moulded lock of characteristic form, stamped with a gold line makers mark on the bridal. Barrel 68.5cm, Overall length 99cm. Hardwood full stock applied with a running pattern of engraved brass blacks over the fore end. Sprays of engraved brass foliage beneath the breech about the trigger, the lock and the tang. The latter solid and engraved with flowers and foliage. Fasted butt of characteristic form applied with further pierced and engraved brass plaques en suite, still button trigger and horned fore end cap. Part of the ram rod replaced. It is very rare to find one of these Balkan rifles with a rifled barrel.
