an antique WW1 German issue 1898/05 Butcher bayonet by Gottlieb Hammesfahr of Solingen dated 1916 in its issue black painted steel scabbard. Hilt with split-bolt retrained ribbed wooden grips the left side of the pommel struck with Imperial German Army inspection stamps. The heavy, fullered Butcher blade is stamped to the left side GOTTLIEB HAMMESFAHR SOLINGEN FOCHE next to the companies pyramid trade mark with a Crowned W16 inspection stamp to the top of the blade for manufacture in 1916 next to an Imperial German army issue stamp. In its original black painted steel scabbard with frog stud to the front. They quickly acquired the nick name of Butcher Bayonets due to the similarity of the blade profile to the large knives used by butchers to cut up carcasses. In very good condition with nice clean well marked blade, good grip scales and a nice scabbard retaining much original finish.
Overall Length - 52cm. Blade Length - 37cm.
