"This pattern of sword was designed specifically for the Royal Engineers, until they adopted the Pattern 1895, it is one of the most attractive Victorian era military pattern swords and also quite uncommon and sought after. The straight blade has some age related patina on it with the original etching still clearly visable. One side has the royal crown, cypher of Queen Victoria (1837 - 1901) and a cannon underneath. There is a proof mark on the blade to JH which can possibly be for one of three cutlers operating at the time, James Hall, Judah Hart or John Heighington. The opposite side has the word ENGINEERS clearly marked. The gilt brass bowl guard is engraved with scrolled leaf decoration, the grip retains its original fishskin grip held in place with brass twistwire. The original brass scabbard, intended for field officers, has a few dents but is otherwise intact. Overall Length - 39 1/2"". Blade Length - 33""."
