A fine and unusual pair of German 40 bore micro rifles percussion pistols by Anton In Munchen. Early 19th century, converted from flintlock by James Purdey circa 1840. With brown octagonal barrels, 26cm. Deeply rifled with 14 grooves and inlaid with silver scroll work at the muzzles and breeches, the latter signed in silver on the top flat. Blued front and back sights. Case hardened breeches with platinum lines and pierced platinum plugs. Signed case hardened bolted locks engraved with Rococo ornament and foilage. Hammers en suite. Highly figured walnut full stocks carved with foilage behind the barrel tangs and inlaid with silver wire scroll work. Butts with steel shoulder stock apertures and silver covers engraved with a coat of arms. Steel mounts including case hardened pommels engraved with busts of mars. Blued trigger guards en suite and each with chiselled foliate finial. Blued side plates chiselled and engraved with foliage, blued set triggers, horn forend caps and horn tipped ramrods.
Overall length 41cm. Anton Baumann was appointed Hofbuchsenmacher to Karl Theodor in 1798. The pistols were almost certainly refinished at the time when Purdey did the conversion..
