A pair of antique 22 bore flintlock silver mounted turn off pistols by James Freeman(Jnr) London. London hallmarks and silver swiss marks JA circa 1745. With swamped two stage barrels, 13.5cm. Numbered 1 and 2 respectively, breeches numbered to correspond. Signed along the top and engraved London beneath the chiselled steel springs. Plain shaped tangs each secured by a screw. Plain actions, cocks, steels and sliding trigger guard safety catches, figured swelling rounded butts, finely carved in relief with foliage around each barrel tang. Finely cast and chased silver mounts comprising pierced foliate side plates. Foliate escutcheons each with a scallop shell above and engraved with owners crest of Newman. Grotesque mask butt caps. London proof marks and Freemans barrel smiths mark.
James Freeman son of James Paul was apprentice to his father in 1730, free of the gunmakers company in 1738 and master in 1754. He died in 1756.
