A German Combined Hunting Sword And 40-Bore Flintlock Pistol Indistinctly Signed, Early 18th Century. With tapering fullered blade double-edged towards the point, the forte etched on one side with a boar and hare hunting scene, and on the other with a stag and hare hunting scene, both scenes against a whorled ground and retaining traces of gilding. Blade 57.cm, barrel 14.3cm. It is very rare to find a combined hunting sword and pistol of this sort.
A German Combined Hunting Sword And 40-Bore Flintlock Pistol Indistinctly Signed, Early 18th Century. With tapering fullered blade double-edged towards the point, the forte etched on one side with a boar and hare hunting scene, and on the other with a stag and hare hunting scene, both scenes against a whorled ground and retaining traces of gilding.
Slender iron guard, two-stage barrel slightly flared towards the muzzle, turned at the girdle and engraved with symmetrical foliage along the breech. Action retaining traces of engraved foliate decoration and the makers signature along the trigger-plate, a very unusual sprung swing-out safety-steel, border engraved back-strap decorated with a vacant cartouche surmounted by a close-helmet, knuckle-guard with shaped bevelled plate engraved with symmetrical foliage and held in the mouth of a chiselled serpent, its tail emerging from the carved animal-head pommel of the fruitwood grip. Blade 57.cm, barrel 14.3cm.
It is very rare to find a combined hunting sword and pistol of this sort. Cf. two related examples in The Saxon Royal Collections, Dresden, illustrated in Heinz-Wemer Lewerken, Kombinations Waffen, 1989, p. 226; and a further example sold Sothebys London, The Visser Collection..., 3 July 1990, lot 30.
