An antique circular shield in the Milanese style of circa 1560-1565, 19th century.
An antique circular shield in the Milanese style of circa 1560-1565, 19th century.
Decorated over the outer face with the battel of Roman and Carthaginian soldiers fighting before the gates of Carthage surrounded by classical figures in strapwork borders. Diameter 62cm. This is modelled on a shield that is part of a garniture with a burgonet preserved in Armeria reale. Madrid Inv .Nos. D3 and D4 the designs have been attributed to Giulio Romano.
