British No 34 Mark III (Sectioned) time-fused egg hand grenade, First World War period. The No 34 grenade, known as the egg grenade (or egg bomb) because of its shape, was introduced in 1917 to counteract the superiority of German light egg grenades. It was particularly suitable for trench fighting. Grenade is an inert reproduction and for decoration purposes only.

Physical description:

Grenade, pin small black painted egg shaped cast iron body; brass striker secured with pin/ring; striker housing and detonator tube screwed into main body; filling plug on side. H 4in x 1.6in diameter.
