What is an Inert Gun?

An Inert Gun is a gun that has never been proofed or designed for use as a proper firearm. They cannot be loaded, and are incapable of discharging a shot or being modified to do so. The locks still function as normal, and can be cocked and dry fired, so from the outside, they are identical to our live firing muskets! From the exterior, they are identical to the real thing.

What kind of Inert Guns are there?

All our Inert Guns are authentic reproductions of historical firearms, such as the English matchlock musket, or the Brown Bess flintlock of the Napoleonic era. Our inert guns are popular items for display, as part of a collection, and even on television and the silver screen. To view our full range of inert guns, click here. Inert guns can be ordered online.

Can I own an Inert Gun without a licence?

Yes, Inert Guns are sold for exactly this purpose. As they are not proper firearms, and can't be used at all for that purpose, they are entirely free to own without a licence. Inert Guns are a great way to own a historic matchlock, flintlock or percussion firearm, without the need for a licence, or without paying the price tag of an original antique.

How do Inert Guns differ from Deactivated Guns?

As they have been made for decoration only, they have never been a firearm, so therefore are neither firearms nor deactivated firearms. Our Deactivated Muzzle Loading Guns are cut on the underside of the barrel, and plugged with a steel plug welded in place, so they can never be loaded. The touch hole is also not drilled, and on percussion guns, a blank nipple is secured in place. The locks still function as normal, and can be cocked and dry fired, so from the outside, they are identical to our live firing muskets!
