The Pedersoli 1805 Baker Rifle

This rifle is the latest model from Davide Pedersoli’s line of black powder rifles. It features the now famous Pedersoli construction and highlights their great attention to detail.

Bearing all the trademarks of what Pedersoli are internationally renowned for, from the brass furniture to its “old silver treatment” of the lock, this finely constructed rifle is instantly recognisable.

The Pedersoli “1805” rifle features their PMG (Premium Match Grade) barrel, with 7 grooves and in .625 calibre, with an adjustable rear sight and even the bayonet bar.

Encasing the barrel is a beautiful walnut stock, as with all Pedersoli stocks, the wood is impeccably smooth and aesthetically pleasing, making it both comfortable to hold and a sight to behold.

Brief history of the Pattern 1800 “Baker” Infantry Rifle

Designed by Ezekiel Baker (from which the rifle derives it’s more commonly referred to name), the pattern 1800 infantry rifle entered service in 1800 as the British military’s infantry rifle and remained in service for a considerable amount of time, having the longest service life of any British military service rifle.

Outside of Britain, the rifle was issued in the Portuguese military, was used by the East India Company and even by Santa Anna’s army at The Alamo. Of course, most of us are familiar with the rifle as being the rifle used by some of the British army that defeated Napoleon’s French army at Waterloo.

Around 1805, the patch box design was changed from a more squared and dimple design to a complete rounded end design which seems to be where Pedersoli have taken their designation of “1805” from.

In Popular Culture

Outside of historical reference, the Baker Rifle is probably most noted as the rifle used by Bernard Cornwell’s now infamous character of Richard Sharpe from his popular book series, and the subsequent hugely popular TV adaptations, starring Sean Bean as the titular character.
