A late 18th century 18-bore flintlock pistol by Tow of London With three-stage sighted barrel now bright and signed in capitals along the breech, grooved border engraved tang decorated with foliage, border engraved flat bevelled lock, the steel bearing on a ramp on the steel-spring, figured full stock with rounded flat-sided butt, the latter with steel mount for a shoulder-stock on the back, steel trigger-guard with acorn finial and decorated with a flower-head on the border engraved bow, turned ramrod-pipes (forward one replaced), and later brass-tipped ramrod, London private proof marks and Tows barrelsmiths mark.
Barrel Length - 25.5cm. Overall Length - 39.5cm.
** Provenance - John Tow became a partner with Joseph Griffin in 1771, and due to the latters failing health took charge of the business in 1783. He also carried on the business conducted with the East India Company. His production of service arms was considerable, but his production for private individuals was small. He died in 1795, and was succeeded in business by Charles Grierson
