An extensive study of Webley & Scott Automatic Pistols. From the early conceptions of the automatic principle by English inventors George V. Fosbery and William J. Whiting to a complete family history of Webley & Scott Automatic pistols. The firm was responsible for the origination, development and manufacture of the only automatic pistols to be commercially produced in Great Britain. It is also important to note that the company designed and manufactured the very first automatic pistol to be adopted by the British Police and the first automatic pistol to be officially adopted by the British armed forces. Large sections of the book are devoted to both weapons, plus the series of events which led to their ultimate acceptance by those authorities. The Webley Fosbery automatic revolver occupies a unique position in firearms history, as it was (and still is) the only weapon of its kind to be produced in quantity, anywhere in the world.

Three distinct models were offered by the Webley & Scott Company and each is dealt with extensively to include a number of interesting variations which occurred throughout production. The sections devoted to those weapons and also those concerning the involvement of Harrington & Richardson (as licensed manufacturers of Webley & Scott designs) will be of special interest to American collectors. Although Webley & Scott pistols may still be encountered in private collections and museums throughout the world, many of the rarest and most valuable specimens are retained by arms specialists in the United States, where interest in these models is gaining momentum. as more becomes known of their production. Previously unpublished material from factory records and other official sources has been included to produce an accurate account of all models in calibers ranging from .22 to .455. An outstanding study.
