An antique Scottish 28 bore all steel flintlock belt pistol early 18th century, probably by John Stewart. With four stage barrel, 19.7cm and engraved with running scroll work and cusped decoration on the flaring octagonal muzzle and with two symmetrical foliate panels on the main section. The bridge partly formed with raised longitudinal ribs behind an engraved monogram and with slotted ramp at the rear. Plain rounded lug, signed with initials "IS" flanked by an arrow head. Three quarter stock engraved on the under side with double lines and with crossed lines on each side of the rams horn butt. Short belt hook, spidery engraved button trigger, original pricker with plain bulbous head and iron ramrod, probably original with turned tip. Overall length 32cms.
The state of John M Kauffmann, Maine USA. The maker of this pistol is probably the same as that of the flintlock gun dated 1703 formerly of the R.T. Gwinn collection. The silver inlayed belt pistol dated 1672 formally of the the W Keith Neal collection. The pair of pistols dated 1701 formerly in the C. Field armoury. The small wooden stocked hard butt pistol and all but the pistol dated 1672 are in the Royal Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh.
