An antique Saxon minors gild axe, late 17th early 18th century. Flat head formed with a characteristic spike fitted at the top with a brass bead, pierced with a slipped trefoil and 6 holes at the back. The haft inlaid with numerous stag horn pellets, engraved stag horn rectangular plaques, the latter decorated with flowers and figures in contemporary dress including the figure of Christ crucified on the back and a kneeling figure on each side at the head. Horn basil cap engraved with the initials I.H.N beneath cross mining implements and with a cross in slender above.
