A rare .550 double barrelled Jacobs patent percussion rifle and bayonet by Swinburn & Son, Birmingham, dated 1861. With browned barrels each rifled with 4 deep grooves, 60.7cm. Fitted with folding leaf back sight of 3 leaves, and adjustable long range sight.

A rare .550 double barrelled Jacobs patent percussion rifle and bayonet by Swinburn & Son, Birmingham, dated 1861. With browned barrels each rifled with 4 deep grooves, 60.7cm. Fitted with folding leaf back sight of 3 leaves, and adjustable long range sight. Numbered breeches, long slender tang, signed and dated back action locks, stamped Patent, figured walnut half stock, case hardened iron mounts comprising butt plate, trigger guard, with chequered spur, and hinged circular patch box cover engraved Jacobs Rifles, a single barrel band fitted with a sling swivel, rear sling loop on the trigger guard and original ramrod. The sword bayonet with fullered blade, regulation hilt, pierced with scrollwork on the front and aperture for the muzzle on the reverse. Pommel stamped 541 and with a spring catch and chequered hard leather grips. Overall length 100.7cm.

Major John Jacob, commander of the Scindia Regular Horse invented his rifle following a series of extensive trials on a specially designed range in Jacobabad. Prior to this he and his fellow officers had achieved some spectacular results with explosive shells blowing up ammunition carts at long ranges.
