An Extremely Rare Massachusetts Arms Co. Smith & Leavit Patent .31 Belt Revolver. With round, sighted tip up barrel, 4, hinging to the steel frame and forming a top strap. Side back lock action with hammer mounted offset to the right of the top strap. Foliate engraved throughout, roll engraved six shot cylinder. Lock plate marked Smith & Leavit Patent, action marked Smiths Patent, and cylinder marked Leavits Patent April 29 1837. One piece walnut grip, brass furniture comprising engraved trigger guard and slim backstrap. Very early serial number marked on underside of backstrap. Action in working order though not fully indexing, barrel securing tab also missing.

This is a very rare revolver, only around 1000 Smith & Leavit patent revolvers were made by the Massachusetts Arms Co. The Massachusetts Arms Co. were early competitiors to the Colt company, and production of this model was halted due to a patent infringement case brought successfully by Samuel Colt.
