Occasionally, your Remington 1858 may develop a fault, and may require a new part. Some disassembly of the gun is likely to be required, but fortunately Remington 1858s are simple and easy guns to work on and feature few internal parts.

When working on guns, always ensure the gun is unloaded, and always use proper fitting hollow ground screwdrivers to prevent damage to the screw heads and marring of the finish.

Note, both Pietta and Uberti revolvers operate in the same way, so the disassembly process is the same. Should you need any spare parts however, please ensure you order the correct brand for your gun, as parts are not interchangeable between manufacturers.

Depending on what part you need to replace, dictates how far the gun is disassembled.

  1. Drop the loading lever, remove the cylinder pin and cylinder. (Note, this step is not possible with blank firing revolvers)
  2. Remove the grips, taking care not to damage the screw. (fig 1).

Figure 1

3. The main spring will need removing to release the pressure on the hammer ( A small hammer is useful to knock the spring out as it sits in a small recess in the base of the grip, you must unscrew the mainspring screw first to remove the spring). (fig 2).

4. Remove the trigger screw (fig3).

5. Upon completing step 3 you will need to remove trigger guard. (fig 3a).

6. Then you can remove the trigger & bolt spring, this is done via a single screw (fig 4).

7. Upon completion of step 3 & 4 the trigger and bolt should easily be removed (fig 5).

8. Now you will need to remove the hammer screw, once this is done you can push the hammer down through the frame this will show the hand and spring attached via a smallgrub screw, you will need to remove this screw then the hand & spring will detach easily. (fig 6,6a,6b & 6c).

9. To reassemble, follow these steps in reverse, replacing broken or worn parts as necessary.

10. Once assembled you will have to ensure the correct function and cycling of the pistol, it is of extreme importance that the cylinder lines up with the barrel. At times a new part may affect correct function of the gun, this is due to all other parts suffering different wear and affecting the timing of the revolver. In this case, the issue is almost certainly the hand, which can be altered with the use of a small file. This may have to be repeated a few times in order to ensure correct function.

Replacing parts in single action black powder revolvers is simple, and proper maintenance helps keep your guns running in top condition for years to come.
