An Italian Vetterli-Vitali model 1870/87 bolt action rifle, 10.35x47mm, having a round sighted barrel, 86.2cm, with bayonet lug on the right hand side, overall length 134.9cm. Very well made rear sight, having a box magazine with a 4 round capacity, reinforcing plate under the action. The stock is highly chiselled with a royal cypher in gold to the right hand side, and also having a matching sling with identical royal cypher likewise in gold. Four groove rifling, in very good condition.
The reinforcing plate, barrel bands, bolt components and others originally gold plated, some trace of this remains. A similar gun exists in the Imperial War Museum, belonging originally to Sir Winston Churchill as a bring back from the Sudan campaign, though without the matching sling. Catalogue number FIR 11543.
