A 24 Bore German Double Barreled Percussion Sporting Gun by Rieger of Munich, circa 1830. With earlier barrels inscribed in gold block capitals Leclare A. Paris, Canon Ruban. Decorated with gold trophies of arms incorporating silver drums and with a further gold panel over the breeches, engraved tang decorated with a starburst, foliage and grooved for sighting.
Flush fitting flat locks signed on the tail on the right and inscribed Munchen on the left. Figured walnut half stock, chequered fore end and grip, the butt with raised cheekpiece with a garland behind. Silver mounts of shaped outline, including a panel reinforcing the wooden trigger guard with openwork terminal. Butt plate, rear ramrod pipe and vacant shield shaped escutcheon. Two iron ramrod pipes, wooden brass tipped ramrod.
A number of firearms were made by members of the Rieger family for the Dukes of Bavaria, including a pair sold by Thomas Del Mar on 13th June 2010, lot 458. Barrel length 75cm, overall length 115cm.
This gun presented by Deane & son, the makers to the friendly competition among their patrons in a pigeon match on the 23rd May 1857, was won by George Collier Esq. of Old Charlton, Kent. Stocked in walnut, chequered at the fore end and grip, with a gold shield shaped vacant escutcheon. Overall length 110cm. In its original fitted case lined in tooled fawn leather, with accessories each fitted in turn, and with trade label to the tooled leather lid. An astounding item in beautiful condition, a very collectable gun.
