A 10 bore Flintlock Wild Fowling Gun by H. W Mortimer, London, Gunmaker to his Majesty circa 1783-90. With lightly swamped 151.6cm barrel, formed in two stages, fitted with silver foresight, signed in full over the breech, engraved with a band of beadwork and struck with london proof and barrelsmiths mark. Gold lined vent, signed, stepped bevelled lock engraved with a bouquet on the tail and fitted with a roller. Figured walnut full stock with take down fore end. Grip cut with pineapple chequering, border engraved brass mounts including solid side plate, decorated with a roccocco shell, trigger guard with a bouquet on the bore and with acorn finial. Butt plate with foliage and a trophy of arms on the tang and four ramrod pipes with later ramrod. Overall length 193cm. Provenance: Ken Drake (1976), H. Lee Munson The Mortimer Gunmakers 1753, Rhode Island 1992, pp 42-43, plate 61. This is apparently the longest recorded gun by any of the Mortimers.
